Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

Husband will not sign seperation agreement or agree to divorce! Help!

I am a student in college and a mother to my daughter ALina age 4 1/2. I got married in 1998 and have not worked since 1999 and started college in the year 2000. I want to divorce him for many reasons but he will not sign or agree to ANYTHING. I have no job and no money, he threatens that if I leave with his daughter he will do something stupid. He says if I stay here he will just torture me as in not take of me financially. So I am trapped and he knows it!! I cannot move on in life if he does not give a seperation or divorce I have asked him to give me either one and he refuses to do so. He tells me to go and get the divorce myself and well he knows I have no money. How can I get out of this marriage? He makes 18.16 an hour and could help get us a divorce but refuses. I am feeling very trapped and helpless to be able to do anything in my position. Please tell me what I should do to get this rolling!

Thanks Jane

Contact the local bar association for a referral to a pro bono attorney or for the number for legal aid. You might also consider contacting Turning Point or any other woman's shelter for assistance. You may also find some help available from a women's group at the college you are attending. Depending on your financial circumstances it is possible to get a "free" attorney and have the filing costs waived. An ex parte order for custody and child support can be obtained as well as exclusive possession of the home . Good luck.
