Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

what is an imputation of income?

The motion reads:

Agree that child support shall be modified if necessary. Both parties will need to provide current income information for a calculation pursuant to the Michigan child support guidelines. Further state that the Plaintiff requests an imputation of income onto the Defendant until the time he gains employment.

What exactly does that mean??

Re: what is an imputation of income?

it means because you don't have any income, they can only charge you a minimal amount or the equivalent to your "earning capacity." This is to prevent a parent from quitting a job or declining a job simply to avoid having to pay a higher amount of child support. Even if you have no job, as long as you are physically able to work or earn income, then you are supposed to pay child support.
