I currently have a large amount of $$$ in my 401K and will be getting married soon, will I lose half of all of it if I were to get divorced?

If you are asking the question, are you sure you want to get married? Anyway, the answer is no, you would not lose half of it. Generally, you take the number of years the 401K was building up and divide it by the number of years of the marriage divided by two. For example, if your 401K was building for 20 years and you were married one year, the spouse would get 1/20 of the 401K, divided by two. If it was building up for 20 years and you were married for 20 years, then it would be 100% divided by two. William S. Stern
