Is it legal to move out at 17?
A cop came to my governemt class and said that it was legal for someone 17 or older to move out. He said that after age 16 you can't be reported as a runaway and cops can't do anything about someone moving out at 17. Is this true?

Greetings; Technically No. However, the officer is correct as to the state of enforcement in most counties. The police just do not have the resources to enforce every little law in our society. The age of majority, i.e. the age that you are legally entitled to live on your own and away from your parents, in Michigan is 18 years. However, a minor of at least 16 years of age may petition the court to live on their own sooner. I hope this helps. -Greg, www.lawgreg.com
