Can I lose custody for moving a lot?

I have not been with my son's father for 3 years. I have always had my son, and never demanded child support. I have been unlucky the past few years, which has caused me to move (residences) quite often. I allowed my son to spend the summer with his dad, seeing as that is what he wanted to do. Now, his father is trying to take my son from me on the grounds of my instability. Does he have any grounds to do so?

Moving around is not grounds to lose custody. However, you are fairly vague when you say you moved a lot. Is a lot 10 times, 15 times? After a while, if the father can show a stable environment and you are a transient, living all over, he may have something to work with. First, you refer to him as your son's "father," has paternity been established? Moving around is generally not grounds for a change in custody. Was the moving excessive?
