Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

Paying court costs

A judge told me I have to pay some $28,000.00 in costs for my daughter when he put her in several places to 'hold' her until she was old enough to go out on her own. I begged him each and every time That I could not ever hope to pay this in my life time. He keeps hauling me into court and ordering me to pay. I just do not have even $5.00 a month to pay. Now he wants me in jail because I made a whole $6000. last year and I didn't pay his court. I am so far behind on all my bills and if he puts me in jail my youngest daughter, who is a good kid and has never been in trouble at all, will be placed in a foster home. Can he put me in jail because I am poor and can't pay him? Is there anything I can do to have this set aside? This is in Roscommon County, Michigan. PLEASE any help will be greatly appreaciated!

Re: Paying court costs

the way I figure it, if you got a full time job paying minimum wage, you'd earn $8,320. If you got a second job, you'd earn at least $12,000.00. The fact that you don't seem to work and most likely can work, means that the judge is imputing the income to you that you would earn if you were sufficiently motivated. You may find the judge's method of motivating you may work. William S. Stern
