Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

How do I get my personal property away from my boyfriend

three months ago I left my boyfriend of one year. He lives in Michigan and I live in Indiana now with our 9 month old son. I have told him he can see our son whenever he wants but he doesn't want to spend the money to drive down. He has all my things - jewelry, clothes, baby things, etc - and refuses to give them back. What is my recourse. I have no money to go to small claims court and he has a felony record and states he doesn't care what the courts tell him to do.

If there is a legal services organization near you, I'd recommend consulting with them first. This is more of a family law matter than a small claims matter, and if your ex-boyfriend isn't paying support, you'd probably want help with that as well. It won't necessarily get your stuff back, but just because your ex is an ex-felon doesn't mean he can't be forced by the court to do anything. Though it would probably be easier to accomplish that in court in Michigan than Indiana given that he is in Michigan, but the first place to start is to consult a local attorney or legal services organization.
