Prenuptial agreement
Im thinking of marrying my girlfreind. Can I have a prenup that will hold up in court to protect my pension and annuity which i have through my Union? She has told me she will sign a prenup no problem. I got Beat up bad in the divorce that I went through a couple years ago!!! But her sister used to be the Lt. Re: Prenuptial agreement
Get the prenup if the prospect of her "taking something from you" really bothers you that much.
Marriage doesn't have to mean a financial merging at all, and you can certainly limit what you're willing to contribute to your future life together. If you have kids, you can always rework it.
Note that anything you bring to the marriage AND keep to yourself is not going to be presumed to be marital property. Once you bring it into the "marriage" then it is shared and subject to division. A prenup essentially allows you to get out of that presumed-fair division by stating both of your intentions right up front. It's not a bad deal, really.
The only problem comes if you later decide to commingle assets. Still, if you can build a life together yet keep things separate, it is not a bad way to go. And, it's no one's business but yours.
If you do it though, make sure that you are each represented by counsel and that the agreement is fair. Prenups are usually upheld, but you want to do it correctly the first time.
