Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

Help!! I received a Petition and Order to Show Cause

My son lives in California with my ex husband and I was ordered to pay child support back in July 2000. I never received any papers from the court or from my ex husbands lawyer, indicating that I had to pay child support. I did not know I had to pay until one year later in 2001, making me already 1 year behind. I was working part time when I was notified and did not make enough to pay the child support. A few months later I was laid off and the Friend of the Court took CS from my Unemployment. I became employed again and they started taking my Child Support payments from my income. I became unemployed again without receiving unemployment so I wasn't able to pay CS. I requested that I attend the Non Custodial Parent Program to help find employment, but was told that there was a waiting list. I have had no luck finding employment therefore unable to meet my obligation of CS. I receive notice that they are taking me to court. I owe approximately $6,000.00 now. I have tried to contact the Friend of the Court and no one returns my phone calls. I am wondering if there is a way to pay some on my debt so I do not end of in jail. Please give me some advice on what my options are if I can not come up with the full amount.

Go to court and explain you circumstances to the judge. Be prepared to pay something. Bill Stern
