Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

Can I refuse to let my son ride on a motorcycle?

I have sole custody(legal and physical) of my 14yr son, he goes every other weekend with his father. His father just bought a motorcycle, I do not know if he is licensed yet I am going to ask and try to find out. The thing is I do not want my son on the motorcycle with him, I do not trust his driving abilities. What does the law say are my rights as far as demanding that my son does not ride with him until he is 18 and then the decision is his. Can I legally tell him no, that he does not have my permission to have him on the bike?

You have the legal right to prevent him from riding on a motorcycle. If you find that your wishes are disregarded, file a motion to terminate parenting time (visitation). I bet the judge would rule in your favor. I love motorcycles but would never allow my kid to ride one either. I don't ride because I do not want to encourage my son or give him any excuse to ride. I know too many people who have been injured, killed or minimally, had real close calls. William S. Stern 248-353-9400
