Re: relinquishing parental rights

You need to ask this question of a MI lawyer if you want to know about MI law. NM law is different than MI law. In NM relinquishment of parental rights normally occurs in context of an adoption and in NM when the adoption is complete then the prior parent (who is no longer a parent of that child) does not have to pay additional child support. In NM if a person owes child support at the time of the adoption and that person has not made some arrangement by which to pay the child support then that person will owe what is due up to the time of the adoption.

Not all states have the same laws as NM. MI may have a completely different set of law addressing the issue of relinquishment of parental rights. If you consulted a family law attorney in MI then you could better understand what the law in MI would be about that particular topic.

Good luck.
