Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

Why am I responsible for my ex-husbands default on loan?

I was divorced 3 1/2 yrs ago and my ex-husband was awarded a vehicle we both signed for. He defaulted on payments, the creditors could not locate him, so they found me and have taken me to court. The judgement is now against me for the balance of the loan. What happens now? Can they put a lien on my home? Why does a divorce decree not release an individual from a contract? Thank you for any assitance.

While the divorce decree can determine your rights against your husband, it does not affect the rights of third parties, like creditors, who have no say in what you put into your divorce judgment. therefore, they can chase you and then you can chase your ex-husband. William S. Stern 248-353-9400
