A retainer is up front money paid to the lawyer. There are two kinds....refundable and nonrefundable. The refundable means that the money is used up as the lawyer works and bills against that money. If he does not use it all, you get a refund. Nonrefundable means that what you pay, kiss goodbye. William S. Stern
