Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

What are my rights

I just moved from Michigan to California in June2001. I left behind my wife and 2 children. I moved to take a job. We had discussed divorced before I left. My question is:''What are my rights when it comes to child custody and should I retain an Attorney to represent me during the custody hearings''. I want to challenge my wife for custody and try to get primary custody so that the kids can live with me in California. I make more than my wife and can provide them with a better environment.. My wife has said that I can be charged with abandonment, Is that true? Any information will be a great help.

Re: What are my rights

you will indeed need an attorney to represent your interests at the hearings. Also, you should send your wife and kids money every week or two to preempt any criminal charges.

Re: What are my rights

You need to hire an attorney in Michigan, since that is where the children are, and that is the state that has jurisdiction to make that decision.
