Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan
My son and his girlfriend are expecting a child and because both are still covered under their fathers health insurance it is my understanding his girlfriends father will be the babies legal guardian. My concern is for my sons legal rights as the babies father should all this go south. We have no idea if his name will be included on the birth certificate. I'm thinking it should be but because of the insurance issues I'm not sure it can be. What should he do to protect his rights as the father? What is the process for him to become the legal guardian of his child down the road? They are planning on marriage but this will be some time down the road after the baby is born assuming everything works out.

The girl's family insurance may still be contractually responsible for the birth costs. The insurance company may somehow have some right to go after your son for the expenses. I don't see what this has to do with guardianship. Someone may be giving you a line of BS. I also do not see what this has to do with putting your son';s name on the birth certificate. However, his acknowledgment of paternity may cause him to be legally responsible for the birthing costs.
