Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

How many times in 1 year can a man be put in jail for failure to pay child support. My son is in jail for the 3rd time in 1 year for not paying child support. He has no job and cannot find work. When they put him in jail, he is in for 90 days then out for 60 days before they put him back in jail.

Unfortunately the Court has the discretion to do this as often as they want. The Court Orders a Show Cause hearing for your son to show cause why he should not be held in contempt for failing to pay child support. The Courts use this as a means to say either pay some or all of what is owed or spend time in jail. The maximum time in jail per violation is governed by State Law but how many times he can be brought before the Court for failing to comply is within the Court's discretion. If there appears to be a blatant disregard for your son's civil rights then perhaps something can be done but that would be tough to show. I would be glad to look into it.
