Re: not told daughter was married

Michigan Law generally recognizes several situations that will terminate your duty of child support. First, if your child gets married. Second, when your child becomes emancipated (18 years of age, 19 1/2 years of age if your child is still attending high school). Third, if you were to die - then your estate is no longer responsible for support payments.

Since your daughter has married your duty to pay child support has terminated. An attorney can assist you in drawing up the documents needed so that you can stop paying, and apply the overpaid amount to the arrearages that you owe. Not knowing you much you owe in arrearages it is hard to tell how much it will be discounted. You will be held responsible for any remaining arrearages. Like every situation there are other factors involved and this is an overly simplified answer.
