Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan
Unmarried mother with islamic child
My daughter-inlaw is single and has a child by a man from lebanon and they live together, but he cares nothing for my daughter-inlaw and says that if she leaves the situation and takes the daughter with her, then he will make sure that she will never see the daughter again. My daughter-inlaw works, makes good money, and is very responsible, but she feels like she is in prison. I would like to know what her options are? He has a lot of money and she is scared that she will lose her daughter. Can you help?

To Whom It May Concern:
This is in response to your email of May 30, 2001, which this office received on June 22, 2001.
Yes, I can help. If she is not happy with her present situation and believes that the marriage cannot be saved, then she should file for divorce/paternity, seek custody and obtain his passport.
Please contact my office if you wish to discuss this matter further.
Sincerely,
Nichols & Eberth, P.C.

Re: Unmarried mother with islamic child
Have her contact the women's shelter in your county for assistance. They should be able to provide her with shelter and some legal assistance to get a custody order awarding her custody of her child. Did the child's father acknowledge paternity yet? Was custody determined in the paternity case? Have her contact the Michigan Family Independence Agency for assistance in contacting the local women's shelter. Good luck.
