Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Michigan

Civil suit

I have a family member who has lived with me several times. At one point he got behind and owes me 3,600.00 for rent. We moved to a new residence and agreed that he would be responsible for the DTE bill and the Comcast bills. The bills were in his name. When he moved out he agreed to comtinue paying on the DTE bill because he owed me for past rent (3600). He did not keep up his end of the bargain and is now suing me for over 6,000.00. He retained a lawyer and I have not yet. I thought that I could tell my side and would be ok in court but now I am wondering if I should retain a lawyer also. I have been told that I will automatically loose the case if I go alone. Any advise would be appreciated. Thank You

Re: Civil suit

No, you won't automatically lose the case if you go alone, but you must answer the complaint on time.

No lawyer likes to proceed against an unrepresented defendant because the judge takes great pains to understand your side of the story.

Frankly, I don't know what your side is because I don't know the grounds for your family member's complaint against you.
