Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Michigan

My daughter's boyfriend purchased a truck for me and my daughter to use. I paid the truck payment while we used the truck - after two years, my daughter and he broke up and my daughter dropped the truck back off at his house - evidently the truck does not run. Her boyfriend is now sueing me for the balance owed on the truck. There is nothing in writing or on paper that ties me to this truck other than my making the truck payments. I've heard that there is a 50-50 chance that the judge can go either way with his decision. If this is the case, is there anything I can do or say to help my case?
