Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Michigan

I am facing a civil lawsuit over a credit card debt in less then a month and I have a few questions to ask. 1) Will I get into any trouble for not being present during the preceedings? 2) Is it too late to file for bankruptcy with a lawyer? 3) Im unemployed and I have no means of paying this back could I face criminal charges or go to jail over this? Please someone help me. I tried another site and they wanted over 30 dollars before giving me answer, that can buy me gas...please please help. thank you

1. Yes, you MUST appear or a default judgment will be entered against you.

2. No, see an attorney immediately, but only if you owe a LOT of money. You will have to pay the attorney in cash.

3. No, there is no debtors prison, but you will totally screw up your credit.

Often the creditors come to the hearing prepared to negotiate your debt down, or reduce the interest rate, put you on payments etc. Don't be afraid to ask the creditor to cut the principle amount owed in 1/2, ditto the interest rate, GET THIS IN WRITING if they agree.
