If one leaves personal property when a home is purchased does it become the property of the new owners?

Yes and no. Once someone moves out and gives you possession, the house is yours, but a small claims court could easily order you to give it over.
Why would you want to keep something that doesn't belong to you? At least give them notice and the chance to pick it up.
