Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Michigan

I purchased a landscaping business and there was suppossed to be 39 accounts, but only 28 had contracts, and the others have no proof other than just random names and address's. The person has not stepped out of the name of the business with the city, or has he informed the customers of the change and given my information to them. They cut until the 10th of July, and afterwards I was suppossed to take over, so I owed $553 for the two weeks of July, they want to file a civil law suit. whose wrong and who has the better advantage? The wife of the owner stated she would sign 3 contracts of people whom she knew. 1 of the contracts they stated was "close friend" and it would be "insulting" to send them the contract to sign it now. But the other 7 they would get them by sending them the contract once the money was paid(however this was not put in writing).
