does scratching a tv screen warrant a civil suit and if so what is the penalty?

I assume that the suit is alleging that the screen was scratched either intentionally or negligently. If you are found responsible, the cost of repair may exceed the cost of replacement of the TV. Therefore, you may be 'on the hook' for a new TV. I'd buy the person the new TV and take the old one for yourself.
