Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Michigan

I am having troubles with a contractor we hired less than a year ago to do some concrete work. The driveway started crumbling away less than six months after it was poured. For a while the contractor was answering the phone when we called, and he said he'd replace the driveway. Now he won't return our phone calls. I want to place a 4' x 8' sign in our front yard (on a busy street) that says:

CONTRACTOR NAME, Don't be a CROOK. Return our phone calls about our crumbling driveway.

("CONTRACTOR NAME" would of course be his real name) This is a very small town and he's well known. We are trying to avoid the courts system if possible. Could a sign such as I've described be considered defamation or slander, and therefore used against us in a lawsuit?

Thanks in advance!
