Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Michigan

I'm unemployed and have no income at all. A civil judge has ruled and demanded me to pay on a promissory note given to my Ex for debt owed in our divorce, as it was explained to me it would be like collecting a debt on a bill. Now the judge has ruled to collect on the debt or I due jail time with fines and court cost and then still have to pay the debt. Anything I owe will be ceased and sold at auction to pay the debt and I will still due jail time. I didn't think we had debtors prison?

If you fail to comply with the terms of a divorce judgment, you can be found in contempt of court. Therefore, I suggest that you go on a job hunt and register at Michigan Works for a job. Keep a list of every place you apply for work and go to lots of places. Prepare a resume. Then, when you have a hearing for contempt, it is doubtful that you will be found in contempt as long as you show a good faith attempt to find work.
