Wrongfully fired from work,can I sue for compensation

I was accused of stealing from work and was suspended until a investigation was done.At my job the product stolen is federally regulated and you can be prosecuted as an federal offense.I was never questioned by the police,my name was brought up because one of my co-workers who I play cards with was belived to have been the prime suspect.Everyone who played cards with us was suspended and ultimately fired.When I was asked by job was I involved I told them I have no knowledge of anything being stolen.There were never any witnesses to say I was involved,and when asked to produce them or show me any evidence I was apart of the stealing they refused.Can I bring suit for monetary damages I've suffered,or at least to clear my name so I can use them as reference on job applications.

If you are accused of theft, you can sue for defamation. However, I would be curious why they suspended the whole card group. Was the item something that everyone saw and that you should have known was company property? Also, there is not much job protection unless you are fired for race, religion, color, creed, national origin or sex. William S. Stern
