Legal Question in Immigration Law in Michigan
My fiance is a new citizen and I am a Brazilian currently just starting my 1 year OPT. We are beginning to make wedding plans. What would be the latest point during my OPT that I can get married and begin the permanent residency process?

You can get married at any time during your optional practical training period. You should file before your practical training ends. If for any reason you overstay you could still receive your green card in the U.S. You can call my offices for a free phone consultation at 408-245-2416 or [email protected]
You should apply before the expiration of your OPT, but if you would like to continue working you will need a work permit while the permanent residency application is pending. Work permits can take up to 3 months to process, so you should plan accordingly when filing your petition. If you would like to discuss this matter further, please feel free to contact me at 415-273-9123 or [email protected].

Hi,
It is recommended that you be married and sponsored before your OPT expires. However, even if OPT expires prior to filing you should still be able to adjust status in the U.S. Additional information is here: www.h1b1.com/Uscitizen.htm
