Re: Illegal Immigrants

I do not believe there is any law prohibiting any U.S. citizen from asking someone if they have a green card. They, however, whether a citizen or not, have the right to say "No." I do not believe you can legally ask them to give you their green card if you specifically ask for it. I really don't know why a person would ask to be shown a green card unless one is an employer or a police officer. On the other hand, there are individuals out there who may "believe" that people who look different, or act different, or even may be a non-citizen, are illegal and want to check - maybe for their own satisfaction. There are a lot of people out there who look different, act different, and may look like immigrants who may turn out to be citizens. So, be careful when you ask -- you may accidentally insult someone who does have a green card and may ask you "are you an immigration officer"? Take care.
