Legal Question in Immigration Law in Michigan

sponsorship and divorce

I was married to my Canadian

boyfriend in 2005, applied for P.R.

status in 2006. I sonsored him, but

because i am a homemaker I had to

get a co-sponsor who is a physician.

He got the green card in March

2007. Now he wants to get divorce

and doe not want to pay the bills or

any form of maintenence. He says if

I sue him in court he will quit his

job, collect welfare, social security

and monthly expenses from the co

sponsor. The green card has a 2 year

condition attached. In the event of

a divorce does it automatically end all

sponsorship liabilities. Thank you.

Re: sponsorship and divorce

No, the sponsor is still obligated to provide support. The obligation continues until your husband has worked for 40 quarters, or becomes a citizen.
