Legal Question in Juvenile Dependency in Michigan

Guardian Tether ??

My 17 year old daughter has gotten into alot of trouble with the police in the last 2 months. First offense was a OUIL along with tobacco act and child endangerment. Next offense was shoplifting cigarettes from grocery store. Most recent offense was another OUIL and possibly child endangerment again. My question is can I request something I just heard of called a tether to help her case and to help me get her under control? I do not mean the electronic ankle thing, I was told there was a type of court order called a tether?? Please help me.

Your best bet is to get your daughter into some sort of intervention program, where they can talk with her and find out what's making her act out.

You CAN ask the court to take jurisdiction, but that power would end on her 18th birthday, so it's probably a waste of time, because the court will tell her that it no longer has power over her in less than a year. All she has to do is behave until her birthday, so that's not going to solve the problem.

She's certainly eligible for emancipation, and that might be the best thing if she's acting out so badly that you can't control her. You can make a deal that if she gets her act together, you will pay for counseling, but if she doesn't she's on her own.

If she acts out after 18, she's looking at a lot more than a tether, but by then, you'll have done all you can do.

So, I would get the kid into counseling while you still have a little control, if you need to get court help, you can ask the court to deal with her as a deliquent who won't mind the rules of your house at least for the next 6 months or so.
