Legal Question in Employment Law in Michigan
Bad References
I have been unemployed for approximately 4 months now. I have made several applications and recieved interviews for positions that went extremely well. When I submitted my references I did not get the position. This has happened on at least 4 occasions to date. The most recent the person who interviewed me stated that ''I am pretty certain that we will be offering you the position, I just have to check your references''. I received no phone call after the date that I was supposed to and they did not return any of my calls. The references that I submitted were from a place of employment that I left on good terms, and recieved many raises for performance during my tenure. I have been unable to check the people that I have applied with to see if it was my references that lost me the position. What options do I have to remedy this situation?

Re: Bad References
There may not be much you can do, short of proof that your former employers badmouthed you, which they aren't supposed to do. What you CAN do is go to each employer and ask for a WRITTEN letter of recommendation. The ones who won't give it to you should be taken off of your reference list.
