Legal Question in Employment Law in Michigan

What is a common law employee?

I was recently offered a job in the investment industry. The offer states that my status would be a ''common law'' employee. Is this the same as statutory? Am I considered an independent contractor? Will I receive a 1099 or a W2 for wages.
