Legal Question in Employment Law in Michigan

Employer wants federal tax return

Not sure if this is the correct place to post this but here goes.

I am an independant contractor and have no health insurance coverage. My wife works for a company that provides health coverage for a spouse if they are a dependant. My wifes company wants to verify our marrige by recieving a copy of our federal tax return. Is'nt a marrige license enough to prove marital status? And; can an employer demand to see a tax document?

Re: Employer wants federal tax return

A marriage license only proves you WERE married. It does not prove you still are, however. Yes, the employer and/or insurance company can require a copy of your federal tax return. If you have a reason why you do not want to show them your tax return, or if you have not filed yet, you can always ask if the company will accept something else.

Good luck!
