Legal Question in Employment Law in Michigan
Hello,
I am a college student, and work for a realty property in my college town (Ann Arbor, MI). I began working for this property on a work-for-rent contract, where I was compensated for a specified number of hours per month with free rent, and was paid hourly for additional time. After working for 2 months, I was offered a promotion to a management position. The person who had formerly filled this position was an older college graduate who had been working with the company for over a year and was on salary. Upon being offered this position, I was not given a formal contract to sign. It was promised to me that I could begin work duties immediately and would have a contract to sign in several weeks. It has been two months, and I have been performing my new duties as best as I understand them, but have not received a formal contract. Further, when offered the job, it was implied that I would be receiving additional compensation, but that compensation has not arrived, yet my work duties continue to expand. I feel that I am being exploited, as I do not have a contract to sign, and my employer has ignored my requests for such a document.

You do not have a contract and are an employee at will, terminable at any time. If you don't like their terms, you are free to leave. www.kliszlaw.com
