is it legal to terminate an employee by telephone at home?
my former employer called me at home on my day off to fire me. now they are telling the michigan department of human services that i quit, making it difficult if not impossible to obtain unemployment or other state benefits while i look for other work.
is it legal to fire someone in this manner? what, if any, recourse do i have now?

It is legal. The unemployment matter is different. Depending on the reason for termination, you may be eligible for benefits.
