Legal Question in Employment Law in Michigan
New manager who successfully turned a very busy critical care unit into a hostile/ unsafe/ unhealthy work environment! If you go up the chain of command about her ( which I did in January) you will become even more micromanaged, disrespected , and eventually be fired( which just happened to me and many others with in a year) every employee on that floor is in fear every day and at least one person is crying every day after being called into her office! I recently was pinpointed and forced to quit for forgetting to punch back in from break and forgetting to punch out! There is a group of us smokers who take breaks together and we try to remind each other to punch in and out as this hospital policy has not been enforced on us in 20+ years for some untill now! We are human and forget! My manager who I know had it out for me decided to pinpoint me and pull up video of me on breaks along with my time card to see if I punched! She found I forgot and took me to HR! The thing is is that there were four of us together on that video and I know and the three others know and my manager knows they forgot to punch too because we do it together and remind each other! I was the only one out of the four that was forced to quit for time card fraud! During my last minute meeting with my manager which I got hr involved ( long story) I quit but did not want to throw my fellow nurses under the bus! It was known by all our past managers that we never punched out and in fact no one in hospital does! Anyways after our meeting my manager pulled the other three in her office and told them hr has a video but not to worry about it! The girls are to scared to go to hr and stand up for me due to the possibility of being fired and then having to become the next victim of our manager! Also hr stated that it will all be investagated and nothing has happened to them so we are thinking our manager altered their time cards to make it look like they did punch in and out! There are so many more things! It's just really bothering me that I have never been in trouble in six years and now I'm fired and all I did was complain about my manager yelling at me in front of my patients and telling me I need to see a counselor because I was having " home" issues! She even called one for me! And now I'm out of a job!

While your situation sounds unpleasant and certainly unfortunate, it doesn't sound like there's much you can do about it from a legal perspective. Unless you were forced to quit for a discriminatory reason or in retaliation for your report (or threat to report) of those safety violations, it sounds like your only recourse is to do your best to move on. I hope this helps. Take care.
