Legal Question in Employment Law in Michigan

Rescinding a Raise

The owner of our company was bamboozled by a disgruntled employee into a $3,000 raise. Since then, he has reviewed his decision and would like to rescind the verbal offer.

Can we do that? Do we notify in writing?

Our Employee Manual says that no raise can be given without a performance review, while giving a performance reivew does not necessarily mean that a raise is forthcoming.

Help...please. Thanks!

Re: Rescinding a Raise

Yes, you can rescind the verbal offer. No, do not notify in writing. This assumes that the disgruntled employee has not changed his position (e.g. rejected a bona fide employment offer from another company or moved his household) because of your offer.
