Legal Question in Employment Law in Michigan

Terminated with out evidence

My employer stated he was terminating myself and 2 other people because the was over $100,000 missing from the company. The only part I have in the payroll dept is that I pass out the checks on payday. He said due to the missing money being in a check anyone who touches checks would be terminated. Even though all were not. He stated we could not get are personal belongings out of the office until after the police searched it.He said that the police would be in touch with us.He will not give us anything in writing to why we were terminated. Its been a week and they have not. What rights do we have to our belongings, and do we need a lawyer?

Re: Terminated with out evidence

Generally, an employer may terminate your employment any time for any reason, the wrong reason or no reason. The employer doesn't have to be correct about his reasoning. He is allowed to make a mistake and is accountable only if his motivation for your discharge is bcause of your race, sex, religion, age, etc.

After the police conclude their investigation, you may have your personal belongings - provided that they were not utilized in the embezzlement.
