Legal Question in Employment Law in Michigan
After having been terminated under questionable circumstances, I have requested a copy of my employment file. In the release I have been instructed to sign if I want my file, the sentence 'I acknowledge by this authorization that I release (my former employer) from any obligation or liability in the disclosure of the contents of such information." Am I waiving my right to bring legal action if I feel I have a case by agreeing to this statement?

Michigan has a law that regulates the content, access, and use of personnel file information. This law allows an employee to review, copy and correct of their personnel record information. The law is known as the Bullard-Plawecki Employee Right to Know Act. It can be found on the books at MCL 423.501 et. seq.
