Legal Question in Employment Law in Michigan
Terminated after 6+ years of service
After almost seven years of service, I have a new manager who seems to have it out for me, we were considered to be at the same level until this. He recently has moved me from my orginal office in the main office to a smaller office out in the shop, I tried to talk with him about this, and I asked him if he wasn't happy with my work to please lay me off. He told me he wouldn't lay me off, he would prefer I quit. If said he wouldn't lay me off, instead he would fire me. I have never been fired. If he decides to terminate me, Can I still collect Unemployment benefits?

Re: Terminated after 6+ years of service
However you leave, be sure to contact the MESC to schedule the day you should report to apply for unemployment. Do not quit. If you have a good or even mediocre work record, you will ordinarily qualify for benefits provided you don't engage in a disqualifying event such as direct insubordination, fighting etc.
Some employers try to avoid MESC liability by "firing" rather than laying off employees but the MESC has an appeal process to protect your benefits. As long as you are involuntarily terminated, you should be eligible.
