Legal Question in Employment Law in Michigan
Unemployment Rights
Can I quit my job of 3 years and collect unemployment benefits? My employer has failed to pay my health insurance premiums after the money was deducted from my paycheck. I now have unpaid health claims that I am liable for. My 401K contributions were not made in a regular schedule. My last pay check was late and is very likely to come back as non sufficient funds. If I were to quit my job would I be eligible for unemployment?

Re: Unemployment Rights
Generally, if you quit your job you cannot collect unemployment benefits. There may be an exception that would apply in your case. The experts on unemployment law in Michigan are the people at the Unemployment Law Clinic, operated as a free service by the United Auto Workers. You can call them at 313-926-5577.
Your employer is requirted to pay the wages and benefits it has promised to pay. You can sue for amounts that are due you. If these amounts are too small for it to be worth your money to hire a lwyer, you can file your lawsuit yourself as a small claims case. You will need to know the name and address of your employer and go to the district court for the area where your employer is located. Also you may be able to get help from the State in trying to collect these amounts. Call the State of Michigan Department of Consumer and Industry Services Wage and Hour Division at (517) 322-1825.
Best of luck and please ask again if you need any more assistance.
