Legal Question in Employment Law in Michigan

I have worked for a family owned buisness for 8 years. My sister for over 15 and my two daughters for 10 and 9. The buisness was sold December 2009. My sister was fired in Feb. 2010, one of my daughters this week. The reason my daughter was told is that she has consistaintly not worked her scheduled hours, she is a hairdresser with 3 young children. My sister cleaned the salon 6 days a week and was told it was because they were not in the cleaning buisness and they were going to out source it. I am an executive manager there and work the front desk as does my other daughter. I reviewd my fired daughters schedule for the past 25 weeks. I chose that amount of time because that is how far our computers go back. Anyway I also reviewed one other service providers schedule for the same period of time. My daughter did not work her schedule 11 weeks. The other one, 20 weeks. This is really the nature of this type of buisness. We have a managers meeting Monday the 20th and I want to bring it to their attention. Oh and the 80% of not working happens to be a manager there as well. It is very evident to my family that we have been treated differently than the other employees as soon as the new owners took over. My sister and I spoke about it often, before she was fired, that something was up. I also need to mention that the salon was owned by my mother. So my question is when I bring this up Monday, if they get angry and fire me or make it impossible in the work enviroment, is there a law suit against wrongfull discharge? I am a single mother and cannot be without an income.

There are no laws being violated by your employer and you should tread very carefully. You are an at will employee and can be terminated for any reason or no reason at all. I would seriously think about making a big deal about your perceived slights, or you might be terminated without recourse. kliszlaw.com Tim Klisz
