Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan

Dead on land vs. Title on house

I bought land from my brother; I have the deed on the land. The land has two houses on them. The previous land owner before my brother holds the title to the houses. The land owner before my brother wants me to pay him for rent, utilities, and other various items including taxes on this land. Do I own anything? The government sent me the proper information this year to pay taxes on this land and the houses there in. Do I owe anything?

Re: Dead on land vs. Title on house

I would need a lot more information to give you an answer. It sounds like something unusual is going on here. A deed is the same as title on a house. There are two types of deeds: a warranty deed and a quit claim deed. Which type of deed you hold makes a big difference. An attorney would need to see the documents and find out how this property came to be transferred to your brother and then to you. You really need a consultation with an attorney who can review the relevant information.

Good luck.
