Freedom Clause

I just received my lease renewal and there is a sentence stating 'If you are interested in information regarding the FREEDOM CLAUSE, available for a nominal fee, please contact the leasing office.' What is the Freedom Clause, and how would it affect apartment rental? If this is information that all tenants should know about then I dont believe we should have to pay for it. The information should be provided to us with the new lease, before opting to sign. Please advise. Also, the apartment complex wants a minimum $50K insurance policy, in which they state that the complex needs to be listed on the insurance as a certificate holder. Is this legal for them to request? For what reason would they request this? Does the tenant have to abide by the request as long as they have proof of the renters insurance and provide that to the complex? Thank you.

I suspect the Freedom Clause is a clause they would add to the lease and they would charge you to add it to the lease. You will need to ask them what the clause is. I doubt they'd charge you just to know what the clause is. While I have heard of commercial landlords requiring insurance, this is the first time I've heard of a residential landlord requiring it. The policy itself shouldn't be very expensive, but you may want to have your lease reviewed by an attorney.
