Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan

house rental lease clause

My lease has the following sentence:

''The Tenant is responsible for utilities and maintenance of the property including water softener salt treatment as needed, lawn mowing and snow removal, as well as rubbish removal''

Does this mean I'm responsible for maintenance of the property in general? Or does this only mean I'm responsible for the specific maintenance items it mentions?

Thanks!

Re: house rental lease clause

Are there any other terms in your lease regarding maintenance? Technically it could be interpreted a few different ways, but generally a tenant is responsible for most of the interior maintenance - and then anything else depends on whether it's a house or an apartment. You are likely not responsible for maintenance of your roof, for example, since it is not specifically mentioned and is generally not something a tenant is responsible for. If you are concerned, I would suggest you clarify in writing with your landlord, in the event a problem arises in the future.
