Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan

My landlord stuck a notice in the door saying we have 7 days to pay past due rent. The papers weren't signed or certified by the any officer of the court, just my landlord. We didn't sign any kind of a rental agreement or lease when we moved in. It's his mother's home and she was placed in a nursing home. Also, I don't believe the house was ever brought up to code before we moved in. Because of a faulty well and pump our water goes out at least once a week, if not more. I never know if I will be able to take a shower in the morning because I'm not sure if the water will be working when I wake up. Do we have grounds if he takes us to court?

You were served with a notice to quit. That is not a lawsuit. You will be served with a suit after 7 days. Your defenses may be valid, but will not exempt you from paying rent in some amount. Visit www.kliszlaw.com to discuss. Tim Klisz
