Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Michigan

Landlord is suing me

I gave notice to my landlord that I

was vacating the home on Dec 1,

even though I was legally under

contract until April. I paid the full

Dec rent even though I was not in

the home. The landlord changed the

locks and utilities on Dec 1, without

notice not allowing me access to the

home and contents. I still had

property in the home valued at $300

+that I could not recover. The

landlord has gotten another tenant

effective Feb 1, so his net loss was

Jan rent which he is suing me for. He

didn't go through any eviction

process. Is it ok for him to change

the locks and still force me to pay on

a property that I cannot access? Is

there a law that allows me to

(counter)sue the landlord for

property lost- that he took and what

is that? I heard I can sue up to 10

times the value of the property. I

want to be prepared for the lawsuit.

I am at wits end with this guy.

Thank you...

Re: Landlord is suing me

It is unlawful for a landlord to change the locks and you may sue them for it.
