if my landlord is verbally abusive and is making me feel uncomfortable in my own living space, can I break the lease without having to pay rent til the end of my contract?

No, you can't break the lease without owing rent. You can file an action for an injunction against him, or you can call the police if he is threatening you. You must get a record of the landlord's behavior before you can use this as a reason for breaking the lease. Your "feeling uncomfortable" is not a valid excuse, you need much more than this.
