Re: lanlord tenant

Have you been putting all of your complaints in writing, so you have a papertrail? If the landlord does not fix a problem that is a health hazard or danger, the tenant can withhold rent by placing it in an escrow account and notifying the landlord where the money is being held. If the tenant is required to spend his own money to fix a situation due to the landlord's failure, then he can request reimbursement. The landlord must have been given an opportunity to cure the problem, however.

Of course the lease office is going to tell you that you cannot deduct your expenses from your rent - why would they say yes? They aren't looking out for you - only themselves.

If the problem does not get fixed properly and timely, I suggest you hire a lawyer to at least write a very firm letter to them so they will take the action they need.

Again, document everything.

Good luck.
